Hi, I'm Joya

Marketing & Communications Leader
I develop strategic marketing initiatives for mission-driven organizations, downtown districts, and institutions seeking to increase visibility, engagement, and economic vitality.

My Background

With more than six years of experience in strategic marketing and communications, I lead comprehensive brand and engagement initiatives within higher education and downtown place management environments. As a Communication Partner at Radford University, I collaborate with university leadership to develop and execute integrated communication plans that align messaging, strengthen brand consistency, and advance institutional priorities.

Previously, as Director of Marketing & Communications for Downtown Roanoke Incorporated, I led district-wide marketing strategy, public relations, and stakeholder engagement efforts to elevate visibility, support local businesses, and strengthen community connection. Across roles, I bring a strategic mindset, collaborative approach, creativity, and an understanding of how intentional communication drives measurable impact.

Path to Communication

My career in communications began long before I held a leadership title. As an undergraduate, I was drawn to visual storytelling and media production by constantly documenting the world around me and gravitating toward courses that explored creativity and shaping messages. Once I formally pursued media studies with a concentration in production, I fully embraced communication by taking as many courses as possible.

I began my career working behind the scenes in television news, where I developed a strong foundation deadline-driven execution and the responsibility that comes with shaping public narratives. This experience honed my ability to break down complex information into accessible content and foster lasting relationships with key journalists, both of which are skills I continue to apply in my work today.

Recognizing my interest in mission-driven communication, I pursued a Master’s in Communication at NC State, focusing on public relations and nonprofit strategy. There, I deepened my understanding of stakeholder engagement, brand positioning, and the role of communications in advancing organizational goals.

These early experiences laid the groundwork for my leadership roles in downtown place management and higher education, where I now develop comprehensive communication strategies, guide brand alignment efforts, and collaborate across diverse stakeholders to drive measurable impact. What began as a passion has evolved into a strategic approach to marketing and communications leadership.
